IRA Update July 2007
July was not a good month (really the last two week) for any of my investment accounts, nor were the first couple days of August which are reflected in my IRA value as 8/3/07. The value of my IRA accounts dropped nearly 7%. I saw large decreases especially in my mortgage industry related investments, AHM (American Home Mortgage) and WM(Washington Mutual).

The Decline Of Washington Mutual
I went to Washington Mutual over two years ago because they had such a good reputation for customer service. Up until the last couple months they’ve been fantastic. but lately it’s gone very downhill very fast. For example, most of their Los Angeles branches are like prisons - you have to walk through these airlock type metal detectors just so you can go into the bank.

About Me
Here’s a quick rundown of my personal finances. I have a WaMu checking account (which is slowly being phased out), an ING Savings account, and the incredible ING Electric Orange Checking account. In a nutshell, paychecks are deposited to the ING Checking, bills are paid, and whatever is left (hopefully) goes into the ING Savings.

Preying Credit Card Companies
My least favorite bill to pay is my credit card bill. I got my first credit card when I was 17 years old, and I am still paying it off. Don’t get me wrong, I accept my responsibilities for being an idiot teenager, running up a bill, and having to pay it off. What has frustrated me for years though is the interest rate. I have not used a credit card since I was twenty years old, and in spite of years of paying my bill on time I still owe over 4,000 dollars. Why? Because for every one hundred dollars I pay 96 dollars go to interest. Ridiculous right? I thought so too.

Where I'm Working These Days
I started a six-month contract at Geospiza, Inc. on November 26th. My job is to write up test cases for the core program, Finch. I'm working for Jim Hancock again who hired me at CVS.com and then at Washington Mutual. It's nice to work for someone who knows my work and likes it.

Card And PIN
At any rate, for the last 2 weeks my Dad, god bless him, has been sending me money from my DubCorp account via Western Union. You see, WAMU did a great job of FedEx’ing me my new cards, but they sent the pin #’s to my PO Box in SLO, where my company is HQ’d with all the local and federal agencies. My dad has driven down to SLO twice now to fetch them from the PO box to no avail. They weren’t there.
